Wired for Success

Wired for Success began as a simple dancer, designed to be lit from the side so the reflection became part of the work. As the piece developed, a question took over: what imbues her with the drive to master that difficult pose?

A dancer holds an arabesque penchée — one of the most demanding positions in ballet, requiring years of conditioning to make look effortless. She is bound by barbed wire she has wrapped around herself. It holds her hands to her foot, completing the pose. This is not something being done to her.

When lit, the reflection on the wall creates a shadow across her eyes: a blindfold. She cannot see, or will not see, the cost of what she's pursuing. The wire is her own making. The grace is real. Both things are true simultaneously.

How are you wired?
