Aperture of Peace

Aperture of Peace embodies concepts of balance, mathematics, and the intricate journey within. The sculpture navigates the tension between the expected and the impossible, juxtaposing symmetric patterns with asymmetric forms.

At the detailed level, you will find complex structure within the sculpture. The top of the chest is inlaid with Spectre tiles—discovered in 2023, the Spectre tile is a "mathematical monotile" and the only known chiral aperiodic tile in the universe. It possesses the unique ability to cover an infinite plane without ever forming a repeating pattern, embodying a striking, unavoidable asymmetry. In deliberate contrast, highly structured, symmetric patterns appear in the head, the waist, the arms, and the area surrounding the Unalome.

At the very heart of the piece lies an Unalome infinity mirror. In many spiritual traditions, the Unalome represents the winding path to enlightenment. Its tight spirals symbolize our daily struggles and the unexpected twists of life, while the transitioning straight line represents the route to harmony, wisdom, and enlightenment. The infinity mirror projects this path into the void: our individual journey is both entirely singular and boundlessly infinite. Here, logic meets the Ultimate Reality, and symmetry meets the aperiodic.

While the underlying concepts bridge mathematics and spirituality, the true soul of the piece lies in its real-world presence. I created Aperture of Peace with a particular intention: to offer the view a moment of equanimity. It is an in-person experience designed to pull you out of the noise. The ultimate hope for this sculpture is that when people stop, take a breath, and truly let the piece in, they experience a genuine feeling of peace.

A Note on This Piece: You may notice the sculpture's appearance varies across these photos. All the images were taken in the same place; the differences you see are caused purely by shifts in lighting and viewing angle. This 'living surface' is an intentional feature of the work, and it will bring the same dynamic quality to your home.‍ ‍
